I’m Juliet, the Research Manager, and like many other nerdy animal lovers, I originally went to Uni to study Zoology. After a PhD in Zoological Genetics, I had an academic research career developing biotechnology in different fields like neuroscience, veterinary virology and cancer.

Much of this research brought me in contact with animals in the lab, but I don’t remember consciously deciding to work on animals at any point. It was a normalised practice in science, and as an animal advocate, I was increasingly uncomfortable with this, and I really wanted to do something about it.

In 2014 I began actively working to change things for the better when I joined the RSPCA Animals in Science Department to run their education programme in animal ethics, welfare and the 3Rs.

I was then lucky enough to get this job at Replacing Animal Research in 2022 to manage the research we fund and help with our education and training programmes.

I feel very privileged that our little organisation is so trusted and respected by the scientific community! It means that I can use my own experience and passion to support and guide other researchers to transition away from the use of animals.

Together, we can do quality science that can truly benefit both us humans and the other animals with whom we share this planet!

• Juliet is the convenor of the Federation of European Laboratory Animal Science Associations (FELASA) Training for Replacement Working Group (2024 – present)
• In April 2026, Juliet was appointed to the Animals in Science Committee (ASC). The ASC is an independent, advisory, non-departmental public body, providing advice on the welfare and protection of animals used in science to the UK Government.
